Words from Mrs. Wallin

Dear Parents/Guardians:

At this time of year, many countries throughout the world have a harvest festival of some kind. In North America, Thanksgiving is the most common autumn celebration, but what does it really mean?

History and tradition note that Thanksgiving originated with the Pilgrims and Native Americans as a celebration rooted in setting aside their differences and thanking God for all their gifts, great and small.  We often times, accept this idea in theory, but our daily actions negate this acceptance. Too many times, we see stereotypes rather than individuals.  We view with suspicion those who are “different” in any way.  Each of us has an obligation to stop the spread of negativism in our relationships with others. We must forego the ethnic jokes, racial slurs, and tendency to categorize groups.  Just as we treasure our own identity, customs, and beliefs, we need to respect those of others. Mutual respect is important in dissolving disagreements on an international as well as personal basis.

A sense of fairness and the knowledge that all people are God’s children will help us avoid making wrong judgments. To keep Christ in our hearts requires that we also look for Him in others. If we demonstrate our own love and respect for those who are different from us, we will be models who show our children that diversity can enrich the flavor of America’s melting pot. We will have taken one more step toward that peace on Earth that must begin with us.

On behalf of the entire school community, I wish you and your loved ones bountiful blessings of true happiness and joy this Thanksgiving season.

Yours in Christ,
Mrs. Maureen A. Wallin
